Determining the locations of the Kehilot centers
To demonstrate the efficacy and viability of the Kehilot plan & strategy
we need to secure the optimal location for the pilot program.
We believe that two key factors for this location are viability
- to ensure the success of the project - and influence - to
ensure that its success can be more readily replicated
elsewhere.
The neighborhoods the best meet these two criteria are the most
secular neighborhoods in Israel, those located in Tel Aviv and
its surroundings suburbs, such as Herzlia, Ramat Hasharon, etc.
The rationale behind basing the pilots here is that if the Jews
living in those areas would buy into the idea of Kehilot they
would set the tone for the rest of the country.
In addition, these neighborhoods are more secure financially,
which makes it easier to maintain the activity of the center
once the 5-year setup and sponsored process is completed.
It is anticipated that the centers, once they have developed
sufficient momentum, would become self-funding through
membership dues, donations and fundraising activities, meaning
the community attains viability and can carry its own weight,.
Finally, the Kehilot concept has to be put to the test in
extreme circumstances. The model/pilot communities are those
with residents who are considered non-observant and even
anti-religious. If the concept can take root in such an area, it
will be deemed as workable anywhere.
