Efforts in Israel to reach
out to disenfranchised Jews and to bridge the divide between
sects have existed for at least 35 years.
These initiatives, undertaken by a wide range of organizations
from an equally wide range of backgrounds, are doing generally
excellent work to advance the application of Jewish morals and
values in Israel.
While these organizations number in their hundreds,
they can be categorized in six basic types:
1) Learning programs for the non-affiliated.
2) Bridging programs between secular and
religious Jews.
3) Enrichment programs for non-affiliated schools.
4) Educational programs for Ba-alei Teshuva
(returnees to
Judaism).
5) Independent program led by rabbis living in
non-affiliated
areas.
6) Kollel programs situated in non-affiliated areas.
Each of these approaches has certain strengths. But experience
and research has also demonstrated that they also have
weaknesses which limit their effectiveness.
