KEHILOT Jewish Communities of Israel (JCI) is a new, creative,
unprecedented effort to bridge Israel's widening divide between
the secular and the religious.
By establishing centers of Jewish life based on tolerance,
Zionism and communal values, while adhering to Halachick
Orthodox principles, JCI offers a path for Israel's disaffected,
secularized youth and adults to return to a life of meaning,
tradition and enduring values.
While there are any number of alternative programs underway in
Israel, JCI is unique because of its focus on creating real,
long-lasting bonds between the religious leaders of a community
and its constituents. No longer merely functionaries at
religious rites of passage, the rabbi and his wife become
friends, confidantes and role models.
The success of this model in communities around the Diaspora is
unequivocal. Charismatic, empathetic, learned, tolerant rabbinic
figures play a major role in the lives of irreligious Jews, but
in Israeli society this model has thus far not taken hold.
The program's initial objective is to build community-based
models that will serve unaffiliated individuals in all aspects
of their life. After one year of establishing the basic
groundwork for success, it will establish model community-based
structures that serve as beacons of light to Israel's secular
community.
